Information on Ex-Racehorses Sought
Published in: Welfare on: 9 Jun 2008

The British Horseracing Authority is asking other members of the National Equine Welfare Council for information about ex-racehorses seen at sales around the country.
Many NPS members regularly attend sales, and might be able to help with the following information:
1.  What is happening now?
They are seeking views from those who frequent markets etc on:
i)          Are ex-racehorses being sold in markets/auctions/fairs other than Ascot Bloodstock, Tattersalls and Doncaster?
ii)         Any idea on numbers over a year?
iii)        Which sales have advance catalogues?
iv)        Have there been any cases of concern over the past, say, five years?  On the basis of the prices being reached and/or the condition of the horses and/or the sellers or buyers.
v)         Do any of the NEWC members have any ex-racehorses on their books
vi)        Any purchases obviously being made for meat
2.  Possible action They would also be very grateful for reports on ex-racehorses being sold.  Information they would like includes:
1.      Date and sale
2.      Registered name of horse
3.      Seller and buyer where possible
4.      Price achieved
5.      Any comments on condition of horse
