British Riding Pony Stallion Licensing Scheme

Eligibility - The NPS will license only ponies which are registered in the British Riding Pony Stud Book or Register or the General Stud Book (small thoroughbreds not to make more than 15.0 hh at maturity).  For thoroughbreds over 15.0 hh application may be made for an NPS Veterinary Certificate in place of a Stallion Licence.

Age for Licensing - Colts should be licensed as soon as they become two years of age.  A pony is regarded as being one year old on 1st January after the year in which it was foaled and becomes two years old on the following 1st January.

Registration of Progeny - The NPS will only accept for registration in the British Riding Pony Stud Book, Register and Appendix the progeny of licensed stallions.   In the case of thoroughbreds, progeny conceived before licensing may be accepted for registration following a successful Veterinary Inspection of the sire leading to the issue of an NPS Veterinary Certificate.

Fees - The fee for licensing a stallion , which includes the DNA testing fee is £120.00. This is not refundable if a Licence is refused

Licensing of thoroughbred stallions - The NPS will license thoroughbred stallions which are registered in the General Stud Book (small thoroughbreds not to make more than 15.0 hh at maturity). For thoroughbreds over 15.0 hh application may be made for an NPS Veterinary Certificate in place of a Stallion Licence. The fee for licensing thoroughbred stallions is £80 (rather than £120) as no DNA kit is required because DNA ia already available for these colts.

Membership - All owners, lessees or agents of NPS British Riding Pony Registered Stallions standing at Stud must be Breeder Members of the National Pony Society.
