Judges Conference Report

NPS Judges Conference held on 16th March 2008 at The Mercure Wessex Hotel, Winchester

A good conference was opened in the morning with a very interesting talk by Mr Andrew Kennedy MRCVS on general conformation with particular emphasis on the importance of limb conformation and their influence on soundness and movement.

This was followed by Ms S Lewis and Ms S Bootman from the ILPH, who explained the importance of condition with regard to the amount of fat carried by the show horse and pony and the long term effects it has on their metabolism.

Dr T Hollands from Dodson & Horrell then talked about the research that is being done regarding the links between diabetes and laminitis, which may well be caused by the influence of certain sugars in the diet.

Finally, we had a talk on ‘When is a snaffle bit a snaffle or not' by Ms T Nassau-Williams from the Worshipful Company of Loriners.   All the speakers were very well received and provoked a great deal of discussion from the floor.

After lunch tables were set up with representatives from each of the Native Breed Societies as well as for the Riding Pony, Hunter Pony and the In-Hand Riding and Hunter Ponies.   A great deal of lively discussion took place for the afternoon, the judges moving round the various tables questioning the experts and being shown photos, DVDs, slides etc to illustrate their information.

Fifty judges attended the conference and the feed-back has been extremely positive. Many judges said that, as well as gaining information from the speakers, they had found it to be an enjoyable social day, meeting up with old friends and getting to know others.

Judges please note: Every judge is required to attend at least one conference or training day in every five years, it is important that our judges realise this, as new ideas and rules are brought forward to be discussed and it is essential that all judges keep themselves up to-date.   NPS judges are greatly respected and we cannot let our standards lapse, so please make sure you attend these days, otherwise we will have to implement the removal of judges who do not fulfil these requirements, as carried out by other societies.
